LED message displays are an exciting new chapter for signs. Rather than constantly updating your signs by purchasing new ones, or manually changing information on the physical structure, now it’s possible to conduct these adjustments electronically. Programmable LED message displays can be basic and connect to a computer in your office, so you can make quick changes on your own. Or, they can be wonderfully complex, requiring a dedicated system to manage the number of screens and different animations.

LED message displays are particularly useful for the transportation industry due to the pressing need to update people about transit or road conditions. For instance, the sign display can update each day to reflect the cost of gas or it can update every couple of minutes with the latest train times. In its most basic form, there is not a lot of room to play around with fonts, but basic icons and color can be used to organize and differentiate information. Simple animations can also be employed to create a sense of urgency or to generate interest. These include scrolling or blinking. However, for the sake of legibility, animations should be used sparingly and with the best interest of the viewer in mind.

LED message displays are also growing in popularity for schools and businesses to update people on the latest news, to keep score, or to use as a general marketing tool. These advanced screens can constantly change and incorporate animation effects and video. Rather than simply a way to inform, these signs are also designed to attract and entertain. For example, an LED message display is a great solution for a university campus that wants to advertise and drum up excitement for the latest events on campus. While printed posters can also be used, they do not offer the same flexibility if you need to respond to last minute guest cancellations, weather issues, or campus-wide alerts.
