An illuminated sign isn’t always appropriate for a sign’s purpose or location and there’s no need to spend money powering up a sign when there’s no added benefit. If your business is located in a mall, for example, where it will be well lit during store hours, investing in quality materials may be more prudent. The good news is, there are many creative opportunities for non-illuminated signs.
First up, you can choose from a wide array of materials including wood, metal, acrylic, vinyl and stone. If your company is housed in a large building, for instance, you might want a comprehensive and stylish directional sign system to impress clients and help visitors find their way. In this case, illumination isn’t needed as the signs are located in an independently lit space. In fact, illumination might create distractions when your directional signs are meant to blend subtly with the rest of the décor. If you want to highlight certain information, paint, color, font choices and texture effects can be used instead of light.
And, because you do not have to worry about a power source, you have flexibility when deciding on the location and mounting method for a non-illuminated sign. This is very helpful if you’re planning a large tradeshow display that you can use multiple times a year at different events. At a conference, you can’t always depend on having a dedicated power source or a way to hang heavy signs. Instead, non-illuminated signs, posters and supplementary advertising materials can be made of light-weight fabric, vinyl, plastic or paper to fit your needs.
While illuminated signs may seem tempting, they might not be the best choice for your project. When deciding on a sign design, ask yourself these questions. What is the purpose of this specific sign? Where will it be located? Based on your answers, you should have the insight you need to make an informed decision.
