architectural signs
If you walk around a university, you’ll probably notice that each piece of campus signage visually relates to the next. This is an example of an architectural sign system and can include a variety of sign types such as directory boards, campus maps and bathroom signs.
Architectural signs are designed for both aesthetics and function, with function being foremost. This means language simplicity, readability and position are the most important design factors contributing to their core purpose. Because they are an integrated part of facility design, architectural signs are often treated as a more permanent installation than other signs. As a result, they can be made from a variety of strong materials, from stainless steel to wood, as a stand-alone sign or part of a comprehensive sign system.
People rely on design conventions to gather information quickly so, when creating a system of signs, it’s crucial to use visual elements consistently. For instance, if the signs in different wings of a hospital are color coded, people take that as a cue to know they are in the right place. It may seem like a lot of extra work up front, but establishing a clear “branding guide,” that outlines these visual “rules,” will speed up the process for any additional signs that need to be created. Just think, many of the design questions that a sign manufacturer will ask will already be answered.
While practicality is important to architectural signs, you can have fun too. The form your architectural signs will take will also depend on the image you want to project about your business. If you’re creating signs for a children’s hospital, you’ll want to design something bright and welcoming, that’s easy for young and old to understand. If you’re setting up a security technology company, a more modern and serious approach might be more appropriate.
