If you’re going for unique and eye-catching, you can’t go wrong with a beautiful neon sign. While LEDs have become increasingly popular as a method of illumination, neon signs remain iconic pieces of art. The first neon lamp was created all the way back in 1902 and neon experienced its true North American heyday during the ‘40s and ‘50s. For instance, if you were asked to describe the prototypical classic diner sign, we’re sure it would be a neon. But while traditionally neon signs are associated with car culture or the bustling Vegas strip, today neon signs are often used to display a company’s quirkiness or to appeal to a customer’s sense of nostalgia.
Neon signs are available in a number of vibrant colours, with the help of a chemical reaction. In short, inert gases, such as helium and carbon, are placed in glass tubes with special coatings. These glass tubes are first planned using computer software, and later created by professionals by shaping the glass over a flame. While similar illumination vibrancy can be achieved with LED lights, neon lights are thought to have a “warmer” light.
Not only are neon signs often used as exterior and interior business signs, they are also seen as custom interior design pieces.
