Illuminated signs make up a broad, and visually exciting, category of signs. While illumination is not required for all signs, what makes illuminated signs so great is their ability to be seen during inclement weather and during the night. For instance, a business sign is a significant investment, so it makes sense that you’d want to keep it working for you even after you clock out for the day. If your sign can attract the attention of passing traffic, it may encourage them to return during operating hours. Moreover, the extra brightness or glow of colour can be what sets you apart from surrounding businesses.
Currently, the popular choice for illumination is the LED-lit sign. LEDs are a bit pricier than traditional lightbulbs, but quickly make up for the higher upfront cost due to their longevity and their energy efficiency. When in use, LED lights are characterized as having a bright and even light, with the additional benefit of emitting less heat, compared to alternative lighting options.
Another illuminated sign type that has been making a comeback recently is the neon sign. The level of artistry required when making a neon sign, as well as its nostalgic appeal, has caused interior designers and business owners to take notice. While a bit more fragile than their LED counterparts, neon signs do have quite the lifespan. There’s a reason so many vintage neon signs are still going strong today!
Just as there are many types of illuminated signs, and there are also many different effects that can be achieved with illumination. For example, your sign can feature exposed bulbs, like a marquee sign, or be face-lit, backlit, or a combination of both! Face-lit is more common and it is easier to read in the dark. However, back-lit is more novel and atmospheric, which can help your business stand out against your neighbours.
