If your business is hidden by foliage or set back from a road or walkway, it can be difficult to let people know you are there. Luckily, these location situations are where pylon signs truly shine. Pylon signs are free standing structures, usually reserved for exterior use, that are perfect for grabbing the attention of passing traffic due to their significant height and solid appearance. However, while their height is an automatic advantage, you still need to think about optimal placement and sizing restrictions. For instance, are you trying to entice passing traffic to visit your store? Then a pylon sign near to the road is best. Are there any other obstacles, such as trees or other signs, that will limit its effectiveness? (Remember, while foliage might not be a problem in winter, you must imagine how much it will cover during summer, in full bloom).

But maybe you’re more concerned with creating a certain atmosphere. A golf course will want to have a beautiful sign near its entry point to welcome visitors and set a positive tone. In this case, it’s the visuals and the quality of materials that are the main elements, rather than the height.

Because pylon signs are often meant to be read by passing drivers, they’re designed to be eye-catching and quick to read. Font size must be sufficient to see at a distance and, in most cases, the content will consist of the business name and logo. An interesting image and basic directions can be beneficial if room allows. And if your sign is part of a pylon sign for multiple businesses, there is an extra level of complexity to deal with. How can you set your sign apart from the others? For an added visual punch, pylon signs can incorporate lighting, interesting shapes, and LED message displays.
